Buying a shed in Kildare
Kildare is drier and more sheltered than the west coast, sitting inland in the Dublin commuter belt. Timber usually performs well here.
A shed usually does not need planning permission from Kildare County Council. It is normally exempted development under the Planning and Development Regulations (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 3) if it meets every condition: it is behind the front wall of the house; all garden structures together, existing ones included, come to no more than 25 m²; at least 25 m² of private open space is left to the rear or side; it is no more than 4 m high with a tiled or slated pitched roof, or 3 m with any other roof; and it is used only for purposes incidental to enjoying the house: not lived in, not a business. If you're unsure, ask Kildare County Council about a Section 5 declaration before you order. The edge cases are in our planning permission guide.
Material advice for Kildare: Kildare's sheltered position and lower rainfall suit timber sheds. If you choose timber, specify pressure-treated, not dip-treated, and keep up basic maintenance. Steel is also a sound option if you want less upkeep or extra security for power tools or a bike.

Common questions: sheds in Kildare
Do I need planning permission for a shed in Kildare?
Usually not. A shed is normally exempted development under the Planning and Development Regulations (Schedule 2, Part 1, Class 3) if it meets every condition: it is behind the front wall of the house; all garden structures together, existing ones included, come to no more than 25 m²; at least 25 m² of private open space is left to the rear or side; it is no more than 4 m high with a tiled or slated pitched roof, or 3 m with any other roof; and it is used only for purposes incidental to enjoying the house: not lived in, not a business. Kildare County Council applies these national rules. Kildare has many newer housing estates, so check your title deeds for restrictions set by the developer: these are common in commuter belt estates and can stop you building even where planning permission is not needed. If you're unsure, ask Kildare County Council about a Section 5 declaration before you order.
Are timber or steel sheds better in Kildare?
Both can work well in Kildare's more sheltered climate. Timber is a common choice: specify pressure-treated, not dip-treated. Steel is worth considering for a larger shed, for extra security for tools or bikes, or if you want less maintenance.
